Bishop Street Methodist Church
… serving people in Leicester city centre.
(Reg. charity 1129068)

The purpose of the Methodist Church is “to respond to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission”

In worship we

  • deepen our understanding of being a disciple of Jesus
  • are challenged to respond both individually and corporately to that discipleship
  • express that committment in mission and service.

In mission we:

  • embody the message of the love of God for all people.
  • prioritise activities which contribute to well-being and spiritual growth.
  • give special support to those marginalised by society.
  • provide accessible ways in which people can encounter Christian faith.

Here are some parting observations from students from the last couple of years:-

"Being welcomed into Bishop Street Methodist church is like being given a big spiritual hug. As a baptised Methodist I was looking for a Christian home so that my worship and Christian fellowship would not wane in this strange new city I was now living and studying in. What struck me most was how, despite the diverse cultures represented in the congregation, we all felt so at home and were treated equally, while still embracing those cultural differences and celebrating them. I have since moved from Leicester and can no longer regularly attend Bishop Street. But in a year of living in London I have yet to feel as at home and part of a community in another church as I have at Bishop Street"

“I have enjoyed coming to Bishop Street Methodist Church because I feel a sense of belonging and I have made a lot of friends with whom we share ideas and help each other in different ways. Being in church also reminds me to be thankful for everything I have.”

“I'm currently studying Architecture at De Montfort University, which I really enjoy, but at times it can be very overloading. Attending Bishop Street Methodist Church gives me the time to reflect about anything, from the week I just had to what I would like to gain in the forthcoming weeks. Also I get the chance to meet more people who are both friendly and welcoming, which has supported me towards settling into Leicester. It has made being away from home much easier and has definitely given me a balance in my busy University schedule.

“I've also been highly impressed by the way Bishop Street Methodist church attempts always to remain current and relevant, in a climate where spirituality is threatened by so many of the distractions of secular life. Whether it be prayer meetings in pizza parlours or ‘Open Church’ or discussions on Christianity's role in current affairs in city centre coffee shops, Bishop Street soldiers on while battling the challenges of finance and a quickly evolving congregation.”

“I have been attending Bishop Street for two years now and really enjoy the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that exists there. The Church is perfectly suitable for students, whether they've been a Methodist from a young age or have never stepped into a Church before. The teaching is both Bible grounded and relevant to everyday life.”

What we believe:

We believe in God the Father almighty.
We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.
We believe in the Holy Spirit.

As members of the Methodist Church:

We commit ourselves to a Christian life of worship and service, open to the renewing power of God. We seek the strength of God’s Spirit as we accept the cost of following Jesus Christ in our daily life. We witness, by word and deed, to the good news of God in Christ, and so bring glory to God.

About the Revd Jill Marsh:

Jill Marsh 8 aug 2007 resizedI began work here, at Bishop Street Methodist Church, in 2004 and have enjoyed almost every minute so far! It’s a lively multi-cultural congregation with fantastic opportunities for Christian witness and outreach in this exciting, developing city centre.

I trained for ministry in Sheffield, at the Urban Theology Unit, and then spent seven years in Rawmarsh, in the South Yorkshire coalfields area, where the church was heavily involved in community development and the formation of social enterprise.

The process of arriving to work here was one through which I felt God was clearly guiding me and it is a privilege to work as part of this church. It is a place where I feel God can use my previous experience.

Apart from my time in Rawmarsh I’ve spent my adult life in various cities and I love city living. Twenty years ago I taught Religious Studies and English as a Second Language. Before my children were born I worked in Forest Gate, Newham, East London. Here I developed a love of interfaith work and I thoroughly enjoy friendships I have been able to make here with people from other faiths, especially where we live in North Evington. I am glad that the church here has been able to support the Leicester Council of Faiths and I have enjoyed being a founder member of the St. Philip’s Centre in Evington, which trains Christians for confidence in a multi-faith world.

We are privileged to have buildings which have a long history of Christian service to the city, and we are very glad that many of the various Christian denominations from around the city are able to use the premises, as well as a wide variety of community and self-help groups.

A lot of the work this church is involved with here reflects my own interests and passions and it is fantastic to have the Just fair-trade shop, SPCK bookshop, and the Leicester Council of Faiths using the premises. Working as one of Leicester’s Street Pastors has been a good way to keep in touch with the life of the city at night and a fun way of sharing faith with other people. Jill as Street Pastor

When I am not working I enjoy gardening, music and cinema.

For me one of the exciting things about Christian faith is that we are always given colleagues to work with us on the tasks God gives us to do. One of the things I love about Bishop Street Methodist Church is the variety of people who end up working together as friends. It is also good to have a team of committed and inspired part-time paid staff and volunteers working together on the development of our premises.

The multi-national experience of the congregation means that we are having our eyes opened all the time to the world around us and it is a pleasure to work here.

Revd Jill Marsh.
