Revd Jill Marsh

About the Revd Jill Marsh:

I began work here, at Bishop Street Methodist Church, in 2004 and have enjoyed almost every minute so far!  It’s a lively multi-cultural congregation with fantastic opportunities for Christian witness and outreach in this exciting, developing city centre.

I trained for ministry in Sheffield, at the Urban Theology Unit, and then spent seven years in Rawmarsh, in the South Yorkshire coalfields area, where the church was heavily involved in community development and the formation of social enterprise.

The process of arriving to work here was one through which I felt God was clearly guiding me and it is a privilege to work as part of this church.  It is a place where I feel God can use my previous experience.

Apart from my time in Rawmarsh I’ve spent my adult life in various cities and I love city living.  Twenty years ago I taught Religious Studies and English as a Second Language. Before my children were born I worked in Forest Gate, Newham, East London.  Here I developed a love of interfaith work and I thoroughly enjoy friendships I have been able to make here with people from other faiths, especially where we live in North Evington. I am glad that the church here has been able to support the Leicester Council of Faiths and I have enjoyed being a founder member of the St. Philip’s Centre in Evington, which trains Christians for confidence in a multi-faith world.

We are privileged to have buildings which have a long history of Christian service to the city, and we are very glad that many of the various Christian denominations from around the city are able to use the premises, as well as a wide variety of community and self-help groups.

A lot of the work this church is involved with here reflects my own interests and passions and it is fantastic to have the Just fair-trade shop, SPCK bookshop, and the Leicester Council of Faiths using the premises.  Working as one of Leicester’s Street Pastors has been a good way to keep in touch with the life of the city at night and a fun way of sharing faith with other people.

When I am not working  I enjoy gardening, music and cinema.

For me one of the exciting things about Christian faith is that we are always given colleagues to work with us on the tasks God gives us to do. One of the things I love about Bishop Street Methodist Church is the variety of people who end up working together as friends.  It is also good to have a team of committed and inspired part-time paid staff and volunteers working together on the development of our premises.

The multi-national experience of the congregation means that we are having our eyes opened all the time to the world around us and it is a pleasure to work here.

Revd Jill Marsh.
