Heritage

With a chapel almost 200 years old, and for its first 60 years the only Wesleyan chapel in Leicester, Bishop Street embodies a great deal of heritage and history. We wish to help sustain and understand that heritage of faith and service, to enable us better serve the present age.

In October 2009 we held an Exhibition of Leicester Methodist Heritage, focussing on

  • the work of the Sunday Schools, particularly through the prizes and presentation of books,
  • The growth and spread of Methodist Chapels in the city,
  • Our war memorials, and the lives lost in the great war,
  • Chapel teas -  a look at Chapel catering 50 years ago.

Oral History

ORAL HISTORY PROJECT:
This is an on-going attempt to record oral history particularly relating to Bishop Street in former decades, and for Methodism in Leicester generally. If you have memories yourself, or know people who will have memories and are willing to be interviewed please get in touch with the church office.
Also, if you are interested in doing interviews, or helping with the oral history project or any other aspect of Methodist heritage, we would love to hear from you.

Arts and Exhibitions

We have been developing our ability to host Art exhibitions in the Chapel. If you have a project looking for display or exhibition space, we would be very interested to talk to you about what we can offer.

In Feb/March 2011 we hosted an exhibition of photographic artworks ‘Affecting Place’ by Zoe Crewdson.

To take this work forward we have begun a re-ordering of the Chapel interior. In particular, in autumn 2009 we removed the previously fixed pews under the galleries. This makes it much easier to host displays and exhibitions of all kinds.

We have received a grant towards display stands, and been given a large number of panels from St Paul’s Cathedral, which we are now re-working into stand-alone display modules. Combined with our new track lighting this enables us to have provide high quality exhibition gallery space, with a very flexible range of stands and units for displaying artwork, panels and information boards of many different sorts, to a high standard.
