Heritage Open Days
Bishop Street Methodist Church again took part in the annual Heritage Open Days, run by English Heritage. There were 24 venues in central Leicester this year, opening at different times between Thursday Sept 6th and Sunday Sept 9th. Details of these can be found at www.heritageopendays.org.uk
Bishop Street Methodist Church opened on Saturday September 8th 2007, between 10.00am and 4.00pm.
The oldest purpose built Methodist Church in Leicester, we have a largely 19th century interior to the main chapel, which was built in 1815. The organ case is by Father Smith, and predates the building by perhaps 100 years, and has been classed as of ‘exceptional’ heritage value.
There were guided tours of the building to discuss the many heritage features. In addition, we made available for inspection our baptismal registers and other documents dating back to the 19th century.
Bishop Street Methodist Church is assembling information about the history and heritage of the church and its activities, over its 190 year history. If you have information, either documents or histories of its more distant past, or recollections from more recent times, we would be delighted to hear from you.
If you wish to write your memories, or would like to be interviewed as part of our oral history project, please let us know.

A short booklet, John Wesley in Leicestershire, published by Kairos Press in 1988, provides fuller information on this, and is available from Kairos Press, or direct from Bishop Street Methodist Church.
