Detail of the Town Wall

This close-up of the medieval wall shows the contrasting textures of stone and brick and the different sizes of bricks. The narrow ones three courses above the stonework are probably eighteenth or early nineteenth century, while the ones above are nineteenth or twentieth century. The fact that so much building work has gone on above the medieval stonework shows that the division of land marked by the wall still operates several centuries after the fortifications ceased to be strategically important.
