Angel Gateway

Angel Gateway

Leicester, like most provincial towns, had a number of inns. None remain, although, until recently, the name, though not the building, of the Saracen’s Head survived on Market Street. One of the the inns, the Angel, was built into the Town’s East wall. A dog-leg passageway from Gallowtree Gate to Cheapside may well preserve the line of a right of way through the Angel inn yard. Scraps of the building remain hidden behind a wall to the left. There are no references to it till after Richard’s time, but it is not unlikely that it dates back to the fifteenth century.
