Section of the Town Walls

Section of the Town Walls

The medieval walls of Leicester followed the pattern of the Roman settlement. The southern section ran along what is now Horsefair Street and Millstone Lane; the eastern part along Gallowtree Gate and Churchgate, and the northern along Sanvey Gate. There was probably a western wall, which followed the River Soar. This surviving section of the wall is in the yard of a shop on Churchgate. The rough stone is typical of medieval fortifications. The bicycle gives scale, and the brick paving lends atmosphere to a remarkable survival.
