St Margaretís Church

St Margaret’s Church

When Richard approached the North Gate of Leicester he would have seen, beyond the crumbling fortifications, the churches of the town, rising above the wooden houses. But had he looked to the left he would have seen Leicester’s grandest church – St Margaret’s. This lay outside the city walls and was the only church not to be controlled by Leicester Abbey. Moreover, when Richard arrived the great west tower and superb south porch were less than forty years old. It would have looked new and sharp-edged in the Leicester sunlight.
