St Mary de Castro: Leicester’s Royal Church

The one church with strong associations with Richard (other than Grey Friars, the place of his burial) is St. Mary de Castro. As the name suggests this is the ‘parish church’ of Leicester Castle. Though his reign was short, Richard visited Leicester and stayed in the castle. As a pious man, he would have attended mass in St Mary’s. Moreover, as the interior is substantially what he would have known – its arcaded nave, broad south aisle and spacious chancel with very fine Norman carving – the visitor might feel closer to the King than anywhere else in Leicester. The ‘High Church’ interior helps to create an appropriate atmosphere.
