The Newarke Wall

The Newarke Wall

The Newarke was a Lancastrian enclosure just south of the castle containing its own church, an almshouse and priests’ dwellings. Something of its importance can be seen behind the Newarke Houses Museum, where a very high and solidly built wall dominates the neat garden. This wall divided the Newarke from the Castle. On the other side of the wall is the churchyard of St Mary’s. The sight of this mighty division from the churchyard is a view worth seeking out.
