Volunteer Opportunities at Bishop Street Methodist Church There are all kinds of ways you can help ... some simple, some a little more demanding, all appreciated! We have a volunteering policy, an agreement with each volunteer, time is recorded and references are given after 3 months of regular volunteering. It’s a great feeling to help others and it’s what God asks of us.... to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves. If you’re interested in any of these opportunities please contact our office on 255 4111 and ask to speak with Rachel Horton or Jill Marsh. Children’s Work Our toddler group needs responsible adults to work with children and parents on a Friday morning. We need helpers with our children’s work on Sunday mornings during the church service. We hope soon to start a Brigade (for boys and girls together rather than separately) group midweek after school times. All these are good ways of helping young people and their parents, and gaining experience in this area of work. We have clear safeguarding policies and if you are interested we will need to get you a CRB check. We look forward to your help. Street Pastors Street Pastors operate from our church office which offers practical and often much welcomed friendly support to young people and others on a weekend evening. See their website. Improve Your Mandarin ... or learn Chinese Calligraphy ... Yan Au is looking for volunteers to be a helper with a weekly Chinese Arts workshop and café to held on Saturdays, 11.30-2.30 in our Wakerley Room. No experience required. Call Yan on 07895 408832 for further details. Arts and Music We are developing more and more art and music workshops, concerts, exhibitions and events as part of our celebration of life. Let us know if this is your passion too as there are plenty of ways of helping. Put the kettle on! Why don’t you come and help out by offering drinks and a friendly chat to those who come to our buildings for a whole range of activities. There are various groups that need this kind of help and we can put you in touch. Transport We are going to start some regular events for our older members. Some will need transport. To help you will need to have your own car and a CRB check, but we can get that for you (the check not the car!). Social Outreach Could you help us support people with social needs who come through our doors? Loneliness, homelessness, asylum issues, mental health problems are all part of life and we can help just by knowing how to respond. This work is good experience and very rewarding and we need people willing to offer 3 hours each week. Recycling When you come why not bring a bag and ask to take home some of our recyclable paper, plastic, or cardboard, for your compost bin, or for a recycle bin near you? Cleaning or gardening We have to try and keep our costs down so we do most of our own cleaning and gardening. If you could offer a few hours a week, or even an hour a month please let us know. An undemanding way of making friends for life! Do you own a washing machine or a sewing machine? There are often little jobs we need doing... please tell us if you might be able to help Care for others We offer a lot of practical care – visiting, doing odd jobs, asylum support, prayer. Chatterbox? Can you chat for England? We’re looking for people who are ready and able (or would like to become ready and able!) to share their faith with others through conversation – in the premises at Open Church, or in other venues around the city centre. Training will be offered. Other opportunities If you have other skills which haven’t been mentioned but which you would like to talk to us about – come and see us.
