As we begin to engage with the book of Genesis for Bible Month 2024, Bishop Street Methodist Church, Leicester, held a 'Talk in the Chapel' on the evening of Thursday 30th May 2024. Miriam Stevenson gave a broad ranging review of how themes from Genesis have been portrayed in Christian Art over the centuries.
From the earliest forms of Christian Art, themes from Genesis have been used to teach, inspire and warn. The illustrated talk was a survey of 1,800 years of Art showing how these images have been combined with science, archaeology and the classical revival. As Miriam explains, "While some artists have used the polarities of Genesis to teach theological and moral lessons, others have revelled in the ambiguity and moral and emotional complexities of the lives of characters such as Sarah, Hagar, Abraham, Jacob and Joseph."
